This the story of the deck that wagged the house, a familiar 50's Dutch-Colonial production house which needed all the good architectural detailing that it could get. The clients became essential contributors to the design from the very beginning suggesting that the deck not only be less imposing, but step down with the stair on three levels to allow a more elegant transition to the backyard. We then appointed this deck with the full 5x5 inch newel posts with acorn finials rather than the usual 3 1/2 inch posts.

Our greatest surprise was discovering redwood instead of Douglas Fur as the decking material that we had been specified. Redwood, unfortunately at the time was the cheapest wood out there, a testament to the clear cutting that was happening in California. The deck is finished off with Sikkens wood finish & preservative. Today we would suggest the use of Smart Deck, See: www.smartdeck.com , which is a composite material of cedar mill tailings and recycled plastic. It's the first plastic deck we've seen that feels and smells like wood with extraordinary long-term durability.
