The Solar Farmhouse concept house won the best "Un-built Project Category" award at the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's Building Energy '96 conference at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. This house was designed for New England Solar Homes as a demonstration of the best energy efficient technologies combined with the picturesque tradition of American home design.
A number of stylistic references were employed in the The Solar Farmhouse design - a classic farmhouse with an attached barn; an 18th century Colonial Saltbox with the familiar diving north roof to protect against the North Wind; and the attached porches of the turn of the century Single Style (in this case a sunspace and west facing porch). One of the most obvious advantages of the connected barn arrangement aside from the aesthetic merits was the ability to have additional roof area to generate 100% of the house's requirements for solar hot water and electricity. The two-panel hot water array on the barn is the common sizing for meeting hot water requirements. Six to eight of these 4x8 panels would be required to provide heating as well to feed through a radiant floor system thus filling up the barn/ garage roof area. See New England Solar Homes for more of our solar home offerings.
